“Urgent Alert: Watch for Abnormal Deer Behavior in Ohio”
Wildlife experts in Ohio are urging the public to report any sightings of deer displaying unusual behavior, such as appearing disoriented or showing little to no fear of humans.
The Ohio Division of Wildlife has posted on their Facebook page that they are monitoring a potential outbreak of Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD) among deer. While EHD does not pose a threat to humans or affect the safety of venison, it can lead to significant deer mortality, according to officials. The disease is transmitted through the bite of an infected midge (a type of fly) and is often linked to drought conditions, which Ohio has experienced recently.
The Ohio Division of Wildlife has released a map highlighting areas where dead or sick deer have been reported. Confirmed cases have been noted in Cuyahoga County, with potential hotspots identified in parts of Summit and Medina counties where multiple suspected cases have emerged.
“Midwestern deer populations have developed little resistance to EHD, and affected deer typically die within three days of exhibiting symptoms,” stated the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. “Carcasses are often found near water sources.”
Experts recommend keeping an eye out for additional symptoms, including fever, swelling of the head, neck, tongue, and eyelids, or signs of respiratory distress in deer.
