Wegmans Nuts Recall: FDA Identifies Risk Level for 8 States

According to News Week, A recall for a Wegmans nut blend, issued earlier this summer, has now received a risk classification from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Flagstone Foods, based in Minneapolis, initiated the recall in August for Wegmans’ Food You Feel Good About Pecan Blend due to undeclared almonds.

Recall Details and Affected Products

The recalled product includes a mix of pecans, cashews, pistachios, canola oil, peanut oil, cottonseed oil, and salt. The recall, which started on August 23, 2024, impacted 16oz versions of the product distributed in Delaware, Massachusetts, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. The affected products have a use-by date of March 27, 2024, and can be identified by the UPC 0-77890-31040-3.

Customers who purchased the blend are advised to return the item to the customer service desk at their local Wegmans for a full refund.

FDA Risk Classification and Health Implications

The FDA has issued a Class II risk classification for the recall. A Class II recall indicates “a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.” The FDA categorizes recalls into three levels based on the potential health risks associated with the product.

Allergen Information and Health Risks

Almonds are classified among the nine “major food allergens” as defined by legislation, and cross-contamination poses a serious risk for individuals with allergies. Exposure can lead to anaphylaxis, a potentially life-threatening condition requiring immediate medical attention. Anaphylaxis can cause constricted airways, severe drops in blood pressure, and swelling of the throat and larynx.

Other serious allergic reaction symptoms include hives, flushed skin or rashes, tingling or itching sensations in the mouth, swelling of the face, tongue, or lips, vomiting, abdominal cramps, coughing, wheezing, dizziness, and loss of consciousness.

Prevalence of Food Allergies

According to the National Center for Health Statistics, approximately 6.2 percent of U.S. adults have at least one food allergy. Consumers are urged to stay informed about food recalls and check for any allergen information before purchasing products.
