RECALL UPDATE: Fudge Recall Update As FDA Sets Risk Level Over Mold

The risk level for a recall of certain products from Authentik Fudge/Montreal Fudge, potentially contaminated with mold, has been classified by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Recall Details

The Canada-based manufacturer voluntarily recalled its Chocolate Fudge with Nuts product, sold under the brand Montreal Fudge, on August 14. An update from the FDA on Friday revealed that the recall has been assigned a Class II risk classification. This classification indicates that the “use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”

In comparison, a Class III classification is reserved for situations where the use or exposure to a product is not likely to cause adverse health consequences. Class I, the most severe category, is issued when there is a reasonable probability that exposure could result in serious health consequences or death.

Company Statement

The firm previously announced, “We initiated this recall after a consumer complained about some mold pieces inside the purchased box, and we found also some remaining unpacked sealed products at the manufacturing site that had beginning signs of mold.”

Health Risks Associated with Mold

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service has cautioned that certain molds on food can pose health risks. “Some molds cause allergic reactions and respiratory problems. A few molds, in the right conditions, produce ‘mycotoxins,’ poisonous substances that can make you sick,” the agency warned.

Consumer Advisory

Consumers who have purchased any of the affected products are advised to destroy them or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund, as recommended by the FDA.
