RECALL UPDATE: Nationwide Snack Recall Update As FDA Sets Highest Risk Level

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has escalated the risk classification for certain recalled snack foods to the highest level due to potential allergen concerns.

Details of the Recall

In August, a significant number of products produced by Indian company Bliss Tree and imported by Sri Lakshmi Narasimhar Overseas, based in Edison, New Jersey, were recalled after it was discovered that the snacks potentially contained undeclared milk and sesame allergens not listed on the packaging. Initially classified as a Class II recall in mid-September, two products have now been upgraded to a Class I classification.

A total of 213 cases of these snacks were recalled and had been sold in stores across California, New Jersey, Georgia, Arizona, Maryland, and online through Amazon.

Understanding Classifications

The FDA defines a Class I risk level as a situation where there is a reasonable probability that use or exposure to a violative product could cause serious adverse health consequences or even death. In contrast, a Class II classification indicates that use or exposure may lead to temporary or medically reversible health consequences, with a remote chance of serious adverse effects.

Labeling Issues and Health Risks

The FDA initially stated that the presence of undeclared milk and sesame was identified during a review of the product labels. “People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk and sesame run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume these products, which are not listed as ingredients on the label,” the FDA cautioned.

For individuals with milk or sesame allergies, exposure can trigger immune responses leading to various allergic reactions. Symptoms may range from mild issues like hives and stomach cramps to severe reactions, including shortness of breath, swelling of the face, and anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is a critical condition requiring immediate treatment with epinephrine and emergency medical attention.

No Reported Illnesses Yet

Fortunately, no illnesses have been reported in connection with these recalled products.

Other Recalled Products Under Class II

Several other Bliss Tree products remain under a Class II risk level:

Cause of the Recall

The recall was initiated after it was found that products containing milk and sesame were distributed in packaging that did not disclose these allergens. An investigation indicated that a temporary breakdown in the company’s packaging processes led to the issue. Production and distribution have been suspended until the FDA and the company confirm the problem is resolved.

Consumer Advisory

The FDA urges consumers who purchased these products to return them to the point of purchase for a full refund. A spokesperson for Sri Lakshmi Narasimhar Overseas LLC emphasized their commitment to addressing the labeling issue promptly, stating, “We are working closely with the FDA and the manufacturer to fix the labeling issue as soon as possible. We are committed to providing our customers with safe and accurately labeled products.”
