Major Drug Bust in Ohio: 15 Arrested in Statewide Operation

In a significant federal crackdown, 15 individuals have been indicted for their involvement in a large-scale Drug Trafficking Operation (DTO) accused of distributing counterfeit fentanyl pills across Elyria, Lorain, and parts of Northeast Ohio. The indictment, which was unsealed earlier this week, follows a comprehensive year-and-a-half investigation conducted by a coalition of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies aimed at dismantling a network allegedly responsible for extensive fentanyl distribution.

Led by the DEA, the investigation received considerable assistance from the FBI, local police forces in Lorain and Elyria, and the Lorain County Drug Task Force. This collaborative effort resulted in a series of arrests and the seizure of fentanyl pills, cash, and illegally possessed firearms.

The case falls under the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) initiative, designed to break up high-level criminal organizations across the United States through coordinated multi-agency efforts. U.S. Attorney Rebecca C. Lutzko emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating, “Taking thousands of these deadly pills off the streets” would not have been possible without it. She highlighted the extreme risks associated with fentanyl, especially when it is disguised as legitimate medication, increasing the potential for overdoses.

At the center of the DTO are its alleged leaders, Ronald Whittaker and Tyvez McCullum. Whittaker is accused of supplying fentanyl to McCullum, who then distributed the drug to the other defendants involved in the operation. According to the indictment, the DTO distributed over 42,000 counterfeit blue fentanyl pills disguised as prescription medications throughout Elyria and Lorain. Federal authorities warn that these counterfeit pills significantly increase the risk of overdose, as users may be unaware that they contain fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid.

The defendants charged with various drug trafficking offenses include:

  • Ronald Whittaker, 31, Cleveland
  • Tyvez McCullum, 30, Elyria
  • Ivan Barrios, 45, Lorain
  • Tavon Martin, 28, Lorain
  • Jaivon Wint, 27, Lorain
  • Katlynn Caudill, 22, Lorain
  • Nicholas Thomson, 47, Elyria
  • Max Kennedy, 19, Wellington
  • Jordan Johnson, 29, Elyria
  • Angela Shuck, 35, Lorain
  • Stacey Thomson, 48, Elyria
  • Tyrone Phillips, 25, Elyria
  • Joseph Kushner, 32, Berea
  • Nicholas Burkholder, 29, Elyria
  • Aubrey Brown, 29, Elyria

These individuals face serious charges related to fentanyl distribution and conspiracy. If convicted, their sentences will be determined based on their criminal histories and specific roles within the DTO.

DEA Special Agent in Charge Orville Greene reiterated the agency’s dedication to utilizing all available resources to combat Drug Trafficking Organizations that spread deadly substances throughout Ohio. Fentanyl continues to be a leading factor in overdose deaths both in Ohio and across the United States, prompting a concerted effort to dismantle DTOs involved in its trafficking.

According to the DEA’s National Drug Threat Assessment, Mexican cartels like Sinaloa and Jalisco are major players in smuggling fentanyl into the U.S., with local DTOs, such as the one targeted in this operation, facilitating its distribution within communities. While these charges mark a significant advancement in the battle against drug trafficking in Ohio, officials caution that the fight is far from over.
