Elyria Bicycle Accident: 9-Year-Old Dies, 10-Year-Old Injured and Hospitalized

A tragic crash in Elyria Saturday afternoon resulted in the death of a 9-year-old boy, while another boy, aged 10, was airlifted to the hospital for treatment.

Elyria Police responded to the incident on the 100 block of Burns Road shortly before 6 p.m. According to police reports, a Jeep traveling east attempted to overtake the two boys riding their bicycles. As the boys changed direction, they collided with the vehicle. Despite receiving emergency aid at the scene, the 9-year-old was pronounced dead.

The 10-year-old was transported by helicopter to University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital for further care. Fortunately, the driver of the Jeep was unharmed.

The incident is currently under investigation, and no charges have been filed as of now. Elyria Police stated that there is no indication of alcohol or drug involvement in the crash, although it remains unclear if speeding played a role.

Local resident Rich Rusnak expressed his concerns about the area’s safety, citing the road’s bends and hills and the prevalence of speeding vehicles. He noted that he had previously raised these issues at a town meeting, where the police chief acknowledged the concerns.

The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident.
