Cleveland Hosts 9/11 Heroes Run for the First Time in 2024

For the first time, the Travis Manion Foundation will bring the 9/11 Heroes Run to Cleveland, with a 5K race scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2024, at 6:30 p.m. The race will be held at Edgewater Beach Trail, providing a scenic backdrop as the community unites to honor the lives lost on 9/11, the wars that followed, and the veterans, military service members, and first responders who continue to serve the nation.

A Tribute to Heroes

The race is more than just a run; it’s a tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of first responders and military personnel. This year, participants will race against the backdrop of over 600 American flags, each dedicated to the everyday heroes who have protected and served the country.

According to the Travis Manion Foundation, the run aims to foster a sense of community, bringing people together to never forget the heroes of 9/11 and the sacrifices made since then.

The Inspiration Behind the 9/11 Heroes Run

The 9/11 Heroes Run was inspired by Marine 1st Lt. Travis Manion, who was killed by a sniper in Iraq in April 2007 while protecting his battalion. Before his final deployment, Manion visited Rescue One in New York City, a fire station that lost almost all its men during the 9/11 attacks. This visit deepened his understanding of why he was fighting and reinforced his commitment to serving his country.

“At its heart, the 9/11 Heroes Run is a tribute to a personal commitment to never forget the heroes of that day,” the organization said in a statement.

A Growing Tribute

Ryan Manion, CEO of the Travis Manion Foundation and sister of the fallen Marine, spoke on the significance of the event, stating, “Each year on the anniversary of September 11, we pause to remember the heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice on that day and those who lost their lives in the wars since. The growth of the 9/11 Heroes Run 5K series over the last 17 years demonstrates a shared commitment in communities nationwide to never forget the sacrifices of first responders and military service members like my brother, Travis, and countless others.”

Investing in Local Communities

Beyond honoring heroes, the 9/11 Heroes Run aims to give back. Proceeds from the race series go directly to supporting local communities, including military service members, veterans, first responders, and their families. The Travis Manion Foundation is committed to investing in these local race communities, ensuring that the spirit of service continues beyond race day.
