Winning $1 billion Mega Millions jackpot prize still unclaimed

In March, someone in New Jersey purchased a winning ticket worth a staggering $1.1 billion, but it remains unclaimed months later.

Winners in New Jersey have up to one year to claim their prizes, and the state allows them to remain anonymous. Despite this, it’s unclear why the winner has waited so long to come forward.

If the jackpot isn’t claimed within the allotted time, each state that participates in the lottery will receive back the portion they contributed to the prize pool. Most states reinvest these funds into their lottery programs, though they aren’t required to do so.
