Bay Village Shooting: Roommate Killed After 911 Caller Claims Self-Defense
Bay Village police confirmed that a shooting early Wednesday morning has resulted in one death at a residence on Bassett Road. The incident occurred around 2 a.m., prompting responses from Westlake Police and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation to assist with the ongoing investigation.
A 911 call received by News 5 revealed that the caller admitted to shooting her roommate, Anthony Hein, during what she described as an attack. “I just shot my roommate; he’s been attacking me all night,” she told dispatchers. When asked if Hein was breathing, she responded, “I don’t know. I left because I was afraid he was going to try to grab the gun. I was trying to get to my neighbor’s house.”
Emergency personnel pronounced Hein dead at the scene, while the woman was treated by paramedics and taken into custody for questioning. Authorities closed a portion of Bassett Road between Windsor Drive and Electric Boulevard during their investigation.
Residents expressed shock at the violent incident in their typically peaceful community. “I was flabbergasted. I looked at the news, didn’t know what house it was. And then I looked out my window and saw it was right across the street. So it was a bit unsettling,” said neighbor Chris O’Connell. Travis Gates echoed this sentiment, stating, “Unfortunately, this kind of thing could happen anywhere, but it’s shocking when it’s in Bay. We normally pride ourselves on being a really safe, small town. But people are people, so bad things can happen.”
Investigators will compile their findings and submit them to the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office, which will determine whether to file charges in the case.
