Grab your Skyline Chili and a frosty beverage, because we’re about to explore 15 terms that only true Ohioans will understand. Let’s hit the road and get started!

O-H!

The first part of a cheer for Ohio State University, answered with “I-O!” When someone shouts “O-H!,” you better respond with “I-O!”

Buckeye

Refers to Ohioans or the Ohio State mascot, also a chocolate and peanut butter candy. Every true Ohioan loves their Buckeyes.

Sweater Weather

Describes Ohio’s unpredictable and often chilly weather. Get ready for some sweater weather this fall.

The Three C’s

Refers to the cities of Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati. I’ve visited all the Three C’s this year.

Pop

What Ohioans call soda. I’m grabbing a pop from the fridge.

The Shoe

Nickname for Ohio Stadium, home of the Ohio State Buckeyes. We’re tailgating at The Shoe this weekend.

The Flats

The entertainment district along the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland. We’re going out to The Flats tonight.

Skyline

Refers to Skyline Chili, a Cincinnati specialty. I’m craving a Skyline coney dog.

Lake Effect

Refers to weather patterns, especially snow, coming off the Great Lakes. We’re getting a lot of lake effect snow this winter.

The Mistake on the Lake

A tongue-in-cheek nickname for Cleveland. Despite being called The Mistake on the Lake, Cleveland rocks!

The Muni Lot

The popular tailgating area for Cleveland Browns games. We’re setting up in The Muni Lot before the game.

Fifth Third

Refers to Fifth Third Bank or the stadium in Cincinnati. We’ve got tickets to a game at Fifth Third this weekend.

C-bus

A nickname for Columbus. I’m heading to C-bus for a concert.

Roll Tribe

A cheer for the Cleveland Guardians (formerly the Indians). Roll Tribe! Let’s get that win tonight.

Rubber City

Refers to Akron, known for its tire industry. The Rubber City has a fascinating industrial history.

Navigating Ohio Like a Local

Now that you’re fluent in Ohio slang, you’re ready to navigate the Buckeye State like a true local. Whether you’re cheering at The Shoe, enjoying a bowl of Skyline, or braving some lake effect snow, always remember to keep it spirited, keep it friendly, and enjoy every moment in the heart of the Midwest.
