Winnie Dortch of 19 News Hospitalized Following Domestic Violence Shooting
Winnie Dortch, a reporter for 19 News, was shot early Monday morning in a domestic violence incident. Lakewood police responded to reports of an argument near Clifton Boulevard just before 8 a.m. Shortly thereafter, witnesses reported hearing gunfire.
Upon arriving at the scene on Chase Avenue, officers found two individuals shot on the sidewalk: a man and a woman. The man, identified as 34-year-old Bryant Carter from Bedford, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Winnie Dortch was swiftly transported to MetroHealth Medical Center by Lakewood EMS. According to family members, she underwent surgery later that morning, which was successful.
Authorities recovered a firearm at the scene and are continuing to investigate the circumstances leading up to the shooting, including the nature of the relationship between the two individuals involved. Police indicated that they were familiar with each other.
The staff at 19 News is heartbroken over this incident and is sending thoughts and prayers for Winnie and her family during this difficult time. “Our friend and colleague Winnie Dortch was the victim of a brutal domestic violence attack,” said WOIO News Director Brian Sinclair. “We are hoping for her quick and full recovery, and we stand with her young daughter and the many other victims of domestic violence in our community.”
