Understanding the 2025 COLA Increase
For 2025, the Social Security Administration (SSA) has announced a 2.5% COLA, which affects various federal benefits, including Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). However, it’s important to note that SNAP benefits are overseen by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), which manages its own separate COLA for the program.
In August, the USDA published updated maximum benefit amounts for the upcoming year, specifically for Texas SNAP recipients. While the federal government establishes base guidelines for SNAP, states like Texas can adjust benefits based on local conditions.
The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) is responsible for administering the SNAP program in the state, including processing applications and distributing benefits. The actual increase in payments is determined by federal COLA adjustments.
New Texas SNAP Maximum Benefit Amounts
Effective October 1, 2024, Texas SNAP recipients will receive the following maximum monthly benefit amounts based on household size:
- 1 person: $292
- 2 people: $536
- 3 people: $768
- 4 people: $975
- 5 people: $1,158
- 6 people: $1,390
- 7 people: $1,536
- 8 people: $1,756
For households larger than eight members, an additional $220 will be added per person.
Although this increase may seem modest, it reflects the slightly lower inflation rate of approximately 2% as of August 2024.
