- Service Obligation: You must have a six-year service obligation in the Selected Reserve. If you are an officer, you need to agree to serve an additional six years beyond your initial obligation.
- Service Start Date: Your service obligation must have commenced after June 30, 1985.
- Training and Education: Completion of your initial active duty training is required, and you must possess a high school diploma or equivalent. Additionally, you must remain in good standing with your Selected Reserve unit.
- Disability Consideration: If you are discharged due to a disability that is not a result of misconduct, you may still qualify for the benefits.

Application Process for Chapter 1606 Benefits

- Obtain Your Eligibility Document: Start by securing your Notice of Basic Eligibility (DD Form 2384-1) from your unit.
- Coding of Eligibility: Your unit will need to code your eligibility into the Department of Defense system.
- Check Program Approval: Before enrolling in any educational program, ensure it is approved by the VA. You can confirm this by contacting the school or using the GI Bill Comparison Tool. If the program isn’t approved, the school will need to request approval from the VA.
- Submit Your Application: Once you’re ready to proceed, submit VA Form 22-1990 online to initiate the application process.
- Certification for Ongoing Training: If you’re already in training, submit the necessary forms (VA Form 22-1990, your Notice of Basic Entitlement, and VA Form 22-1999) to your school or employer for certification.
If you’ve had more than one qualifying period of active duty, you may be eligible for up to 48 months of benefits. Additionally, if you are called to active duty, your eligibility period may be extended by the length of your mobilization plus four months.
