Scones Recall: FDA Updates Risk Level for Undeclared Allergens

According to News Week, The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced the risk level for two scone products voluntarily recalled by Skagit River Bakery & Café due to undeclared allergens. The Washington-based bakery pulled batches of Blueberry and Marionberry Scones off the shelves on August 22 after discovering that soy lecithin and soybean oil were not listed on the packaging.

Recall Classification

In an FDA update released Wednesday, both recalls have been classified as Class II. This classification indicates that the “use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”

For context, Class III recalls are designated for situations where the use of or exposure to a violative product is unlikely to cause adverse health consequences. Conversely, Class I recalls, the most severe category, are issued when there is a reasonable probability that using or being exposed to the product will cause serious health consequences or even death.

Details of the Recall

The recall affects approximately 1,200 units of Marionberry Scones, which are bulk packaged in cake boxes lined with parchment paper and sold unwrapped. The FDA noted that the products are not individually labeled and are held in bulk for retail sale. Each retail location maintains a notebook detailing all the ingredients used in the scones.

Skagit River Bakery & Café voluntarily initiated the recall after receiving a phone call regarding the undeclared allergens.

Health Risks for Consumers

Undeclared soy lecithin and soybean oil can pose significant risks for individuals with soy allergies. Symptoms can range from mild reactions, such as rashes, itching, and hives, to severe and potentially life-threatening anaphylaxis, as noted by Anaphylaxis U.K., an organization focused on allergy research. Individuals with soy allergies may experience immediate or delayed reactions, which can manifest hours or even days after consuming soy products.

Additional FDA Recalls

In a related note, the FDA recently recalled several dog food products contaminated with harmful bacteria. Various beef and chicken dog food items produced by Answers Pet Food, based in Fleetwood, Pennsylvania, tested positive for Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes. The FDA advises consumers to dispose of these contaminated products in a manner that prevents access by children, pets, and wildlife.
