One-Time Payments of Up to $6,000 Available for Dental Patients Affected by Data Breach

According to The Sun, THOUSANDS of dental patients could be eligible for one-time payments of up to $6,000 from a multi-million dollar settlement related to a significant data breach involving Great Expressions, a network of 246 dental care centers across the United States.

Background on the Data Breach

Great Expressions was sued for allegedly failing to adequately protect consumer information during a September 2023 data breach. The lawsuit claims that the company’s cybersecurity measures were insufficient, allowing unauthorized access to sensitive consumer information. While Great Expressions has not admitted any wrongdoing, the company has agreed to settle the lawsuit to resolve the claims.

Who is Eligible for the Settlement?

The settlement will benefit those who received a notification from Great Expressions regarding the data breach. It distinguishes between two subclasses based on whether the breach compromised Social Security numbers:

For Individuals with Compromised Social Security Numbers:

    • Reimbursement for ordinary losses up to $500
    • Compensation for extraordinary losses up to $5,000

For Individuals without Compromised Social Security Numbers:

    • Compensation of up to $40 for two hours of lost time, compensated at $20 per hour

Claim Submission Details

Class members must submit a valid claim form by November 8, 2024, to receive settlement benefits. Claims should include proof of data breach-related losses, such as receipts, bills, invoices, or credit reports.

A final approval hearing is scheduled for December 12, 2024. Claims must be filed under penalty of perjury, and fraudulent claims can negatively affect other eligible class members.

Certain Costco shoppers may receive refunds as part of a $3.875 million settlement for overcharges. Additionally, eligible claimants on Cash App could receive up to $2,500 from a $15 million settlement related to a data breach.
