New double Social Security payment coming before end of year – and it’s down to technicality in the system

MILLIONS of Americans will receive two Social Security payments in one month before the year ends. More than seven million people across the U.S. currently receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI), with the maximum monthly payment for individuals set at $943.

Who Qualifies for SSI Benefits?

SSI benefits are allocated to seniors over 65, as well as disabled adults and children. Typically, payments are made on the first of every month. However, there are occasions throughout the year when beneficiaries receive two payments in one month, primarily when the 1st falls on a weekend.

November Payment Schedule

In such cases, payments are issued on the preceding Friday. SSI beneficiaries received two payments in May and August, and they will also receive two checks in November. The first check will be issued on November 1, followed by a second payment on November 29.

It’s important to note that Americans will not receive an SSI check on Sunday, December 1, but will instead receive a payment on December 31.

Payment Amounts

Individuals can receive a maximum check of $943, while couples can receive up to $1,415. However, the actual amount an SSI claimant receives can vary by state. For instance, claimants in states such as Arkansas, Mississippi, and North Dakota do not receive top-ups to their benefits, while states like Florida and New York provide additional benefits to SSI recipients.

Eligibility and Application

Social Security officials indicate that Americans may be eligible for SSI checks if their assets do not exceed $2,000. Applications are open to those aged between 18 and 65 who reside in any of the 50 states and have not previously received SSI payments.

Factors Affecting SSI Payments

Several factors can lead to reductions in SSI payments. For example, income from work—whether through self-employment or contractual work—can impact benefit amounts. Payments may also be reduced for individuals already receiving other disability or unemployment benefits.

Other Social Security Payments

It’s important to remember that SSI is not the only Social Security payment available to Americans. Social Security benefits are issued monthly, but the timing of payments depends on the recipient’s birthday.

  • Those born between the 1st and 10th of the month receive their checks on the second Wednesday.
  • Individuals with birthdays between the 11th and 20th receive payments on the third Wednesday.
  • Lastly, those born between the 21st and 31st must wait until the final Wednesday of the month for their payments.
