Larger families, such as those with eight members, can qualify for benefits up to $1,751.

Factors Determining SNAP Benefits

To qualify for SNAP, households must meet specific income criteria:

Income Tests:

    • Gross monthly income must be below 130% of the poverty line.
    • Net income, after deductions, must be under 100% of the poverty line.

Asset Limits:

    • Households without an elderly or disabled member must have assets of $2,750 or less.
    • Households with an elderly or disabled member must have assets of $4,250 or less.

Deductions:

    • Standard deduction ($193 for 1-3 person households in FY 2024)
    • Earned income deduction (20% of earnings)
    • Dependent care, medical expense, child support, and excess shelter cost deductions.

SNAP benefits are based on household size and the USDA’s Thrifty Food Plan. In FY 2024, a one-person household can receive up to $291, while an eight-person household can receive up to $1,751. SNAP assumes families will spend 30% of their income on food, and your monthly benefit is calculated by subtracting that contribution from the maximum benefit amount for your household size.
