MONEY GRAB: Americans in line for payment up to $8.5k from $825k data breach settlement – they don’t just need a receipt to get cash

Carvin Software is offering up to $8,500 to individuals affected by a data breach that compromised personal information. The company has agreed to pay $825,000 to settle the class action lawsuit, but those eligible have just over a week left to file a claim.

Details of the Data Breach

The breach occurred between February 22, 2023, and March 9, 2023, and allegedly exposed sensitive information, including Social Security numbers and financial account data. Class members claim that Carvin Software failed to implement adequate cybersecurity measures to protect this information.

Settlement Benefits

  • Monetary Compensation: Affected individuals can claim up to $8,500 for documented losses resulting from the breach.
  • Identity Theft Protection: Class members will receive two years of free identity theft and credit monitoring services.
  • Compensation for Lost Time: There is an option to claim $20 per hour for up to four hours, totaling $80, for time lost dealing with the breach.

In addition to the $825,000 settlement, Carvin Software will invest $700,000 in improving its data security policies.

Eligibility and Claim Process

Individuals whose personal information was compromised during the breach period can file a claim. Losses covered include credit expenses, bank fees, fraudulent charges, and identity theft damages.

To receive compensation, claims must be filed by August 30, 2024. Claimants need to provide documentation such as receipts, bills, invoices, account statements, and credit reports to prove their losses.

The final approval hearing for the settlement is set for September 25, 2024.

Other Ongoing Settlements

  • TransAm Trucking: The company has agreed to a $3.75 million settlement over allegations of failing to pay required wages to drivers. The deadline to file a claim is August 23, 2024, with payments expected to be at least $35 from the $125,000 settlement fund.
  • Group 1001: An insurance company involved in a $4.76 million settlement.
  • LensCrafters: The company has agreed to a $39 million settlement.
