Important SSDI Update: 2025 COLA Increase and What It Means for You
Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) recipients in the United States may receive their monthly payments on October 9, 16, or 23. Some beneficiaries already received their SSDI checks or direct deposits on October 3, meaning their next payment won’t come until November 1, 2024.
Who Qualifies for the October 9 SSDI Payment?
SSDI recipients eligible for the October 9 payment, which can be as much as $3,822, must have birth dates between the 1st and 10th of any month. However, these payments are only for those who have applied for SSDI and received approval from the Social Security Administration (SSA). If you also receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI), you are not eligible for these Wednesday payments in October.
SSDI Payments After October 9
The remaining October payments do not apply to individuals who began collecting Social Security before May 1997. For those eligible for the October 16 payment, your birthdate must fall between the 11th and 20th of any month.
If your birthdate is after the 20th, your next SSDI payment will be sent on October 23, provided you didn’t receive the October 3 payment.
Payment Amounts
The maximum SSDI payment for October is $3,822, but most recipients receive an average of $1,539. Your payment amount depends on factors such as work history, earnings, and the age at which you filed for benefits.
SSDI and the 2025 COLA
On October 10, 2024, SSDI recipients will learn about the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) increase for 2025. The Bureau of Labor Statistics will release the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) for September, which the SSA will use to calculate the 2025 COLA for Social Security retirement, SSDI, and SSI benefits.
The adjustment will take effect with January 2025 payments. According to the latest projections from the Senior Citizens League, the 2025 COLA increase is expected to be around 2.5%, which is lower than the increases seen in 2022, 2023, and 2024. For instance, an SSDI payment of $1,000 in 2024 would increase to $1,025 in 2025.
