ACT FAST : Americans to get one-time payment from $115m privacy settlement – Know Everthing
Americans may qualify for cash payments stemming from a $115 million settlement related to a privacy class action lawsuit involving Oracle, a cloud applications provider. This settlement comes after allegations that Oracle illegally collected personal information from the internet and sold it to third parties for advertising purposes.
Allegations Against Oracle
The lawsuit claims that Oracle tracked various aspects of consumer behavior, including web activity, in-store purchases, geolocation, and other personal data without obtaining consumer consent. It is alleged that the company sold this information to third parties for advertising use, raising significant privacy concerns.
Oracle partners with notable companies such as Uber, AMC, and MGM Resorts, making the implications of this lawsuit particularly relevant for many consumers. The settlement specifically benefits individuals whose personal information was collected by Oracle, as well as those whose data was made accessible through Oracle’s ID Graph, Data Marketplace, or other advertising products since August 19, 2018.
Settlement Details
While Oracle has not admitted any wrongdoing, the company agreed to this substantial settlement to resolve the data privacy lawsuit. Under the terms of the settlement, class members are entitled to receive an equal share of the net settlement fund. The exact payment amount will depend on the number of claims submitted and the fees deducted from the settlement.
Additionally, Oracle has committed to changes in its data collection practices. The company has agreed to cease capturing user-generated information from referrer websites or its own site forms and will implement an audit program to ensure compliance with its privacy obligations.
Important Deadlines
For those interested in claiming their share of the settlement, key deadlines are approaching. The deadline for exclusion and objection is set for October 17, 2024. Class members must also submit a valid claim form by this date. A final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for November 14, 2024.
Other Settlement Opportunities
In addition to the Oracle settlement, Visa and Mastercard customers may also be eligible for payments from a significant $197.5 million settlement. This case resolves allegations that the companies charged unlawful surcharges on ATM transactions, including cash withdrawals, potentially violating federal antitrust laws.
Furthermore, Americans might qualify for over $7,000 from a separate $3.25 million settlement related to a data breach involving See Tickets. The company reportedly failed to adequately protect consumer information from a data breach that occurred in September 2023, though it has denied any wrongdoing.
