Americans who own vehicles from Kia and Hyundai are in luck, as they can claim one-off payments of up to $3,375 following a settlement related to concerns over vehicle security. This opportunity arises as part of a court settlement aimed at compensating customers affected by inadequate anti-theft technology in certain car models.
The $145 million settlement was reached without either manufacturer admitting any wrongdoing, as reported by Unión Rayo. The issue came to light after numerous drivers across the United States filed complaints against Kia and Hyundai, claiming that their vehicles lacked essential anti-theft features, particularly engine immobilizers.
Security Concerns
Engine immobilizers are a standard safety measure in modern car manufacturing, designed to prevent vehicles from starting without the correct key. However, Kia and Hyundai opted for traditional turn-key ignition systems, which left drivers more vulnerable to theft. Cars equipped with engine immobilizers deter thieves, as it becomes significantly more challenging to hotwire a vehicle.
In response to these concerns, both manufacturers have introduced free anti-theft software upgrades nationwide and have collaborated with local law enforcement to distribute free steering wheel locks to customers.

Genesis Motors Expands into UK Market
This settlement news follows a recent announcement from Genesis Motors, the luxury arm of Hyundai, which plans to open physical showrooms across the UK. Previously operating on a direct-to-consumer model, Genesis aims to establish a network of up to 20 dealerships to meet growing demand. The initiative seeks to ensure that 90% of British customers are within an hour’s drive of an official dealership.
The move marks a significant step for Genesis, which was established as an independent brand in 2021, separating from its parent company, Hyundai. Currently, six showrooms are operational, with more set to launch in partnership with major dealership franchises like Pendragon, Sinclair Group, and Arnold Clark.
Genesis UK brand director Jonny Miller stated, “We want between 15 and 20 retail partners and have 15 to 16 strategic locations identified across the UK.” With the push toward net-zero emissions, over 1,300 Genesis vehicles have already been registered in the UK, reflecting increasing interest in electric vehicles (EVs).
