Power Outages at Cleveland Hopkins Airport: Latest Developments
CLEVELAND (WJW) — The FOX 8 I-Team has been investigating the ongoing power issues at Cleveland Hopkins Airport, where recent outages have raised concerns. On Wednesday, the airport experienced two brief power outages, following a similar incident a few weeks prior.
During the latest outages, lighting went out and escalators halted, but backup generators activated to maintain essential operations. Last month, severe weather caused a significant power failure that led to flight delays, with two main electrical lines becoming inoperative.
The airport has been relying on an outdated main transmission line, but spokesperson Michele Dynia assured that changes are on the horizon. “A few days ago, we received the green light to switch back to the two main lines that failed on August 6. However, it will take approximately an hour to shut down the airport and manually transition from the old feed to the two redundant feeds,” she explained.
Following last month’s storms, there were reported issues with backup generators; however, this time, the airport confirmed that those problems have been resolved. Crews are expected to make the switch back to the main power lines soon, likely in the middle of the night to minimize disruption to airport operations.
