Five-State Salad Recall: Potential Allergen Risks Prompt Urgent Consumer Warning

According to News Week, The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a recall of thousands of seafood salads due to concerns that they may contain undeclared allergens. Over 1,600 units of Hannaford Seafood Salad, produced by Elevation Foods, have been recalled across five states: Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, and New York.

Potential Allergen Risk to Consumers

The FDA warns that consumers with an allergy or severe sensitivity to soy face the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume the affected products. The recalled seafood salads have been removed from Hannaford store shelves to ensure consumer safety.

Cause of the Recall

The recall was prompted after it was discovered that the label printer mistakenly provided Elevation Foods with incorrect labels that did not match the product. The FDA stated that these labels were intended for a future formulation change and were shipped in error.

No Reported Illnesses

As of now, no illnesses related to the recalled seafood salads have been reported. The FDA advises consumers who purchased the impacted product to avoid consuming it and to return it to the point of purchase for a full refund.

Understanding Soy Allergies

Soy allergies occur when the immune system mistakenly identifies soy proteins as harmful, leading to various symptoms ranging from mild to severe. Common symptoms include vomiting, wheezing, gastrointestinal issues, swelling of the tongue and lips, hives, difficulty breathing, and dizziness.

In severe cases, soy allergies can trigger anaphylaxis, a potentially life-threatening reaction that restricts breathing and can cause dangerously low blood pressure. Anaphylaxis can be treated with an epinephrine injection, commonly known as an EpiPen.

Importance of Preparedness

Individuals with severe allergies are strongly encouraged to carry an epinephrine injector at all times to respond quickly in case of an allergic reaction.
