‘Miraculous’ Recovery: Winnie Dortch Healing After October Shooting

19 News Reporter Winnie Dortch remains hospitalized after being shot earlier this month in a domestic incident, but there’s positive news as she has been discharged from the Intensive Care Unit and is making a “miraculous” recovery. Though she still faces months of therapy, Winnie is doing well and eagerly looks forward to returning to work. She also expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support she has received.

The incident occurred on October 7, when Lakewood police were called to reports of an argument near Clifton Boulevard just before 8 a.m. As officers responded, additional calls came in reporting gunshots. Upon arriving at Chase Avenue, police discovered two people shot on the sidewalk—a man and a woman.

The man, identified as 34-year-old Bryant Carter from Bedford, was pronounced dead at the scene. Winnie Dortch, the woman involved, was rushed to a local hospital, where she underwent several surgeries.

Police recovered a gun at the scene and are continuing to investigate the events leading up to the shooting. According to authorities, Dortch and Carter were known to each other, though the exact nature of their relationship remains under investigation.
