BIG News: Social Security Payment Schedule September 2024: Here’s When You’ll Get Paid

The first round of Social Security payments for September 2024 has already been issued, with the second round scheduled to be sent out in just a few days. If you’re unsure about when to expect your check, we have the full September 2024 payment schedule and answers to common questions about benefit payments. For those still waiting on August’s payment, we also explain what to do if your Social Security payment is missing.

Social Security Payment Schedule for September 2024

The Social Security Administration distributes payments based on the date of the month you were born and when you began receiving benefits. Here’s the schedule for September:

  • If you started receiving Social Security before May 1997: September 3
  • If your birthday falls between the 1st and 10th of the month: September 11
  • If your birthday falls between the 11th and 20th of the month: September 18
  • If your birthday falls between the 21st and 31st of the month: September 25

How Is My Social Security Payment Date Determined?

Social Security payments are generally issued based on your birthdate:

  • Birthdate between the 1st and 10th: Payment is made on the 2nd Wednesday of the month.
  • Birthdate between the 11th and 20th: Payment is made on the 3rd Wednesday of the month.
  • Birthdate between the 21st and 31st: Payment is made on the 4th Wednesday of the month.

Note: There is an exception to this schedule for those who began receiving benefits before May 1997.

Government Benefits Payment Schedule

If you received Social Security benefits before May 1997, or if you receive both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI), your payment dates are fixed rather than determined by your birthdate.

  • Social Security payments are issued on the 3rd of each month.
  • SSI payments are issued on the 1st of each month.

These dates may shift if the 1st or 3rd falls on a weekend or holiday. For instance, in March, payments were issued two days early due to the 3rd falling on a weekend. The same adjustment will occur in November.

What to Do If You Didn’t Receive Your Social Security Check

If your Social Security check does not arrive as scheduled, the Social Security Administration (SSA) advises waiting an additional three mailing days before reaching out. If you still haven’t received your payment, call the national toll-free number: 1-800-772-1213.

The SSA notes that wait times are generally shorter in the morning, later in the week, and later in the month. If you encounter difficulties contacting the SSA through the national number, you can use their office locator to find a local office for assistance.
