Understanding Listeria and Its Risks
Listeria monocytogenes is a type of bacteria commonly found in moist environments, soil, water, and decaying matter. This bacterium is particularly resilient, as it can grow even in refrigerated conditions, making it difficult to control.
Eating food contaminated with Listeria can lead to listeriosis, a severe infection that poses a high risk to young children, elderly people, individuals with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women. In pregnant women, it can result in miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth, or life-threatening infections for newborns. For older adults and those with compromised immunity, listeriosis can be fatal.
Healthy individuals may experience short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Listeria ranks as the third leading cause of death from foodborne illnesses in the U.S., causing around 1,600 cases of food poisoning and approximately 260 deaths annually.
