Waffle Recall Alert: FDA Issues Risk Level for 13 States Amid Safety Concerns

According to News Week, Vanilla and buttermilk-flavored waffles recalled in August by Kodiak Cakes have now received a risk classification from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The recall involves approximately 7,300 boxes of the Kodiak Protein-Packed Power Waffles Buttermilk & Vanilla, which were shipped to Costco locations across the Midwest.

Recall Details

Kodiak Cakes, based in Utah, voluntarily recalled these waffles due to the potential presence of soft plastic film. This type of recall has been classified as “Class II” by the FDA. A Class II recall indicates a situation in which exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, with a remote probability of serious adverse health effects.

The recalled waffles have a use-by date of January 10, 2026, a lot code of 24193-WL4, and the UPC number 705599019203. The product was distributed to Costco branches in several states, including Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

Health Risks Associated with Plastic Contamination

Foreign objects such as soft plastic film in food products pose significant health risks. This type of plastic can easily become lodged in the throat, particularly for children, the elderly, or individuals with swallowing difficulties, which could lead to choking incidents. Ingesting plastic film may also result in gastrointestinal blockages.

Moreover, some plastics might contain harmful chemicals like BPA or phthalates, which can leach into food, potentially causing long-term health issues, including hormonal disruption and other toxic effects. Additionally, plastic film could harbor bacteria or contaminants that threaten food safety, increasing the risk of foodborne illnesses.

Industry Impact and Consumer Safety

Foreign object contamination is a leading cause of food recalls in the U.S., accounting for 11.6 percent of all recalls between 2020 and 2024, according to regulatory compliance firm Trace One. Kodiak Cakes stated, “The quality, safety, and integrity of our products is our number one priority. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this has caused you and appreciate your cooperation in this matter.”

As of August 26, no injuries related to the recalled products had been reported, and no other products were affected by this recall. Consumers are encouraged to check their kitchens for the affected waffles and return them to their place of purchase for a full refund.

Other Recent Food Recalls

The recall of Kodiak Cakes waffles is part of a larger trend, with several other food products recently recalled. These include a dark chocolate gelato dessert for mislabeling, chocolate bars for failing to declare the presence of nuts and wheat, and macaroni salad due to foreign material contamination.
