Urgent Cheeseburger Recall: BrucePac Expands Listeria Contamination Alert
According to News Week, Dakota Tom’s Sandwiches, a food wholesaler based in Corsica, South Dakota, has voluntarily recalled several of its burger products due to concerns about possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria.
FDA Announcement and Recalled Products
The recall was announced on Friday by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on the agency’s official website. The affected products include:
- Pepperjack Cheeseburger (UPC: 737296806008)
- Bacon Cheeseburger (UPC: 3729680300)
- The Gambler burger (UPC: 737296601788)
These products were distributed to retailers in South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, and Wyoming.
Reason for Recall
The recall arises from concerns regarding burger patties supplied by BrucePac, an external supplier that has also issued its own recall due to similar contamination fears.
Consumer Advisory
Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them and to return them to the point of purchase for a full refund. All impacted products have best-before dates ranging from September 1, 2024, to November 23, 2024.
Health Risks of Listeria
According to the FDA, Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in vulnerable populations, such as young children, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals may experience only mild, short-term symptoms, which can include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. However, Listeria infections can lead to miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
No Reported Illnesses
As of now, there have been no reported illnesses related to the recalled products.
Action Taken by Dakota Tom’s Sandwiches
Dakota Tom’s Sandwiches has stated that it will no longer use burger patties from the affected facility of BrucePac.
Product Identification
Photographs in the FDA announcement show that the packaging of all three products prominently features the product name, barcode, and the Dakota Tom’s Sandwiches logo, which depicts a man wearing a hat and bandana holding a sandwich.

Additional FDA Recalls
On the same day, the FDA also classified a recall of ice cream sold by Today’s Frozen Desserts, Inc. in Miami as a Class II recall after it was found to contain undeclared food colorings Yellow 5 (Tartrazine) and Yellow 6 (Sunset Yellow FCF). A Class II recall indicates that the product may cause a temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequence, or where the probability of serious health consequences is remote.
Additionally, the FDA classified the recall of a potato salad product produced by Lemonland Food Corp as a Class I incident, indicating a high risk where exposure to the product could lead to serious adverse health consequences or death.
Dietary Supplement Recall Announcement
On October 16, the FDA announced the recall of several tablets sold as dietary supplements, produced by C&A Naturistics, after they were found to contain undisclosed drugs, including dexamethasone, diclofenac, and methocarbamol.
