Unplugged: Best Buy Shuts Down Store, Leaving Shoppers in Need of New Options for the Holidays

According to The Sun, Best Buy has permanently closed one of its locations as customers rush to find gifts for the upcoming holiday season. This decision is part of a broader trend of store closures the electronics retailer has experienced over the past year.

Closure Details

The Best Buy store located at 15750 Shady Grove Road in Gaithersburg, Maryland, officially closed its doors on October 26. This store had been a staple in the community for over 30 years. According to the MoCo Show, a commercial real estate firm known as KNLB is now leasing the 46,155-square-foot space, which is described as a “rare box opportunity” on the firm’s website.

Shoppers in the area will now need to travel to the remaining Best Buy locations in nearby cities, including stores in Rockville and Germantown. Notably, the Germantown location is currently undergoing remodeling and will have reduced hours, closing from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM during standard business hours Monday through Friday.

Ongoing Trend of Store Closures

In 2023 alone, Best Buy closed 24 stores, and the outlook for 2024 and 2025 suggests a continuation of this trend. During a recent earnings call, Best Buy CEO Corie Barry confirmed that between 10 to 15 additional locations would close by December, with a similar number projected for 2025. This means that over a three-year span, nearly 50 Best Buy stores could shut down nationwide.

The Maryland location joins a growing list of states experiencing Best Buy closures in 2024, which includes California, Colorado, Ohio, Minnesota, Missouri, and Virginia.

Reasons Behind the Closures

According to Barry, these closures are part of Best Buy’s strategy to “strike a balance between its workforce and consumer interest.” Several factors contribute to this decision, including inflation rates, shifts in consumer spending habits, and ongoing supply chain issues stemming from the coronavirus pandemic in 2020.

Despite the closures, Best Buy still operates approximately 1,053 locations across the country, although the retailer experienced a six percent drop in sales revenue in 2023, as reported by Retail Dive.

Expansion Efforts in Canada

While facing challenges in the U.S. market, Best Buy continues to expand its footprint in Canada. The retailer recently confirmed the opening of 167 Express locations in partnership with Bell Canada. These smaller-format stores focus on a “curated assortment of tech” and emphasize in-store pickup and online order fulfillment, indicating a shift in their business strategy to adapt to changing consumer preferences.
