SWEET RELIEF: STAR program handing out $1,000 checks in free money from $2.3 billion pot – and applications are still open
A special initiative has been delivering direct payments of over $1,000 to millions of Americans in New York, and there’s still time to sign up. These payments have been going out for months as part of the New York School Tax Relief (STAR) Program, which was launched by state officials and Governor Kathy Hochul.
STAR Program Overview
The STAR Program has committed a $2.3 billion budget in 2024 to provide tax relief for nearly three million New York State residents. In a press release, Governor Hochul emphasized the importance of this initiative in easing the financial burden on New Yorkers amid the rising cost of living.
“Back-to-school season is also tax relief season for millions of New Yorkers,” said Hochul. “From tax credits to child care assistance to summer food benefits, we’re continuing to put more money back in the pockets of working New Yorkers to address the cost of living and help families across our state.”
Who Qualifies for STAR Payments?
At least two million New Yorkers have already received payments through the STAR Program, with another million expected to receive their checks in the coming months. The program provides property tax relief to eligible homeowners and senior citizens across New York.
The amount each claimant receives depends on several qualifying factors, including household income. Homeowners with incomes of $500,000 or less can expect to receive “several hundred dollars,” according to the release. Senior citizens aged 65 and older with household incomes under $98,700 could see payments of over $1,000.
Payment Options and Timeline
Payments are being distributed either via mailed check or direct deposit. This year, for the first time, recipients can opt for direct deposit through a new digital portal, allowing them to bypass the check in the mail. Residents of Long Island, in particular, still have time to sign up for direct deposit to receive their relief payments that way. Alternatively, claimants may choose to apply the funds directly to their annual school tax bill.
All payments are expected to be distributed by September 30, aligning with the most common school tax due date across the state. However, the school tax due date varies in different areas, with Long Islanders, for instance, having a later deadline.
While most recipients have already been identified, it’s unclear if there is still time to enroll in the STAR Program this year. Additional information is available on the STAR resource center page.
Other Financial Relief Programs Across the U.S.
Other states are also rolling out financial relief programs in 2024. For example, select families in Georgia may receive $1,000 payments as part of a new “music” program. In Texas, a controversial initiative has been revived, offering $500 monthly payments to certain homeowners.
