Suspect Arrested in Shooting Death Outside Garfield Heights Dunkin’ Donuts
A suspect has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a man outside a Dunkin’ Donuts on Turney Road earlier this month.
While police have not yet released the suspect’s name, they confirmed that the arrest took place in the Columbus area, and the suspect is currently awaiting extradition back to Northeast Ohio. Specific charges against the suspect have not been disclosed.
The shooting occurred on October 4 when Jose Ervin Jr. was at the Turney Pit Stop gas station with a group after leaving a neighborhood bar. Surveillance footage obtained by News 5 captured an argument between Ervin and another man wearing a white shirt. After placing their food and drink orders, Ervin and a woman, who identified herself as a bartender, returned to their vehicle.
As tensions escalated into a physical confrontation, the two women intervened. In the video, Ervin is seen backing away as the man in the white shirt pulls a gun from his bag and chases Ervin across Turney Road, firing multiple shots at him. Ervin tripped and fell onto the curb in front of the Dunkin’ Donuts and was later pronounced dead at the hospital. The shooter, along with the two women, fled the scene in a car.
Ervin’s family expressed relief that police made an arrest just before they gathered for a Celebration of Life service on Saturday. In the wake of the tragedy, they had urged the shooter to turn himself in, with Ervin’s family member stating, “Turn yourself in. You see what you’ve done to my family.”
Jose Ervin Jr. is survived by his wife, Scierra, who gained attention in August 2023 when News 5 reported on their unique story of giving birth to twins on the same day as their birthdays, a coincidence that made national headlines.
