Stop & Shop Eliminates Automatic Surcharge to Enhance Affordability at 25 Locations
According to The Sun, Customers at Stop & Shop in Rhode Island can look forward to lower grocery costs following the recent removal of an automatic surcharge. The retailer announced the elimination of a 10-cent fee for paper bags, which will take effect this month, allowing shoppers to enjoy free bags once again at any of the 25 stores in the state.
In an effort to make groceries more affordable for Rhode Island residents, Stop & Shop is also reducing prices on thousands of its national and private brand items. Starting in October, shoppers can expect over 3,500 products across various departments to have price drops, amounting to approximately 87,500 reductions on merchandise.
Discounted items will feature yellow tags that highlight the new prices compared to their original listings. Some examples of products that will see price reductions include Boneless Chicken Breast Value Packs, Hass Avocados, Kraft Shredded Cheese, and Yoplait Yogurts, with discounts ranging from 11% to 30%.

Additionally, Stop & Shop is introducing “Savings Stations” at its Rhode Island locations. These in-store savings centers will allow customers to save on groceries using digital coupons. By scanning their GO Rewards loyalty card or entering their phone number, shoppers can instantly access eligible digital coupons. These coupons can be saved on devices or printed for in-store use.
Other benefits for Rhode Island shoppers include weekly sales, a “deal lock” program that secures sale prices for several weeks, and meal deals that provide families of four with a discounted main protein dish and complimentary items to complete their meals.
While Stop & Shop operates over 350 locations in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island, it recently announced the closure of at least 32 locations across these states, with all expected to be closed by November 2, some already shuttered.
