RECALL UPDATE : Ground Cinnamon Recall As Latest Product Labelled ‘Unsafe’ by FDA

According to Newsweek , A new product has been added to a nationwide recall of ground cinnamon due to concerns that it may contain harmful levels of lead, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced. This recall expansion follows a health alert issued in July, and now includes a total of 11 products.

The most recent addition is Super Brand Cinnamon, which is sold at the Asian Supermarket in Little Rock, Arizona, and distributed by IHA Beverage in California. The Arkansas Department of Health identified elevated lead levels in the product, prompting the recall. The FDA has cautioned consumers that exposure to these levels of lead can be unsafe, especially for young children and infants.

The FDA strongly advises consumers to dispose of and avoid purchasing any of the affected ground cinnamon products. Lead is a naturally occurring toxic metal that can accumulate in the body over time. When exposed, lead can replace calcium in bones and teeth, where it can remain for years, potentially causing serious health issues.

Short-term exposure to elevated lead levels can result in symptoms such as headaches, abdominal pain, vomiting, and anemia. Long-term exposure can lead to more severe health problems, including irritability, lethargy, fatigue, muscle weakness, tremors, and difficulty concentrating. Lead poisoning can also affect the kidneys, immune system, and reproductive health.

The FDA has highlighted that young children are particularly vulnerable to lead exposure because of their smaller body sizes and rapid growth. High lead levels during pregnancy, infancy, and early childhood can have detrimental effects on neurological development, resulting in learning disabilities, behavioral issues, and lower IQs.

As of now, no illnesses or adverse health events have been reported in connection with the recalled products. The FDA continues to test cinnamon samples nationwide to ensure safety.

The agency recommends the following steps for consumers:

  1. Stop using and dispose of any of the recalled cinnamon products.
  2. Check your pantry for any of the affected products, which have a long shelf life.
  3. If you or your family have consumed any of these products and experience symptoms, consult a healthcare provider.

To reduce the risks of lead exposure, the FDA stresses the importance of a healthy and varied diet, which helps prevent the accumulation of harmful substances and supports proper development, especially in children. Adequate nutrition can also help minimize the harmful effects of lead exposure.
