ODNR Unveils $3.9 Million Restoration of Lonz Mansion at Middle Bass Island State Park

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) marked the completion of a $3.9 million restoration of the historic Lonz Mansion at Middle Bass Island State Park with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday.

“The Lonz Mansion is an essential part of Ohio’s history, and we’re proud to preserve it while offering visitors a chance to engage with the island’s rich past,” said ODNR Director Mary Mertz. “This project honors the mansion’s legacy while creating new opportunities for visitors to experience the history and natural beauty of Middle Bass Island.”

The restoration project included significant structural updates, such as the installation of a new HVAC system, modern plumbing, a new roof, and other improvements. The mansion, along with 124 acres of Middle Bass Island, was acquired by the state in 2001.

Visitors can explore the mansion’s history through a self-guided tour of the first floor, where they can learn about the Lonz family and their winery. The second floor offers a unique opportunity for guests to spend the night in this historic building while enjoying the island’s picturesque surroundings.

In addition to the Lonz Mansion project, the ODNR also celebrated the grand opening of the newly renovated Dillon State Park in Nashport, east of Columbus. The newly completed Nature Center and updated camp store were unveiled, reflecting the state’s commitment to enhancing the visitor experience at Ohio’s parks.

“The new Dillon State Park Nature Center and renovated camp store show our dedication to providing visitors with modern, educational spaces,” said Mertz. “These updates ensure everyone can enjoy their time at the park and leave with a deeper appreciation for Dillon State Park’s natural beauty.”
