Major Beauty Retailer Announces Closure: Final Sales and Operations Ending

Companies rarely make the decision to close without a long and often painful decline, particularly in the retail sector.

Initially, regular customers may notice that popular items frequently go out of stock, while shelves are filled with less desirable products. This typically occurs as a company tries to conserve cash in a bid to buy itself some time. Unfortunately, in today’s digital age, if customers can’t find what they want in-store, they’re likely to order it online for quick delivery instead.

This sets off a cycle that often leads to a financial downward spiral. Selling fewer items makes it nearly impossible to climb out of a financial hole, prompting many retailers to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. This legal protection allows companies to fend off lawsuits while they negotiate with creditors and seek new investors in hopes of returning to profitability.

While some retailers, like Party City and David’s Bridal, successfully navigate Chapter 11 and emerge stronger, others, such as Christmas Tree Shops, Bed Bath & Beyond, and Tuesday Morning, find themselves moving from Chapter 11 to Chapter 7 liquidation.

Boscia’s Unfortunate Closure

In a rare move, popular online beauty brand Boscia has announced that it will close its operations entirely, rather than undergoing a bankruptcy process.

Boscia has positioned itself as a leader in clean beauty, emphasizing its mission to harness the power of plants in skincare. “Since 2002, plants have been the secret to our skincare success,” the company states on its website. “We use ingredients rooted in nature — plant-to-bottle formulas that show results with fun formulations. Good skin comes naturally because in our world, beauty really does grow on trees.”

However, the brand struggled to compete in a crowded market, particularly as online-only retailers face significant challenges. Despite its ambitious goals and unique product offerings, Boscia’s mission ultimately fell short, and the company will close its doors on May 31.

Closing Without Bankruptcy

Boscia has not filed for bankruptcy; instead, it has announced it will simply shut down its retail website. A brief message on its website and Instagram page conveyed the closure: “We regret to inform you that we will be closing our website on 5/31. We want to express our sincere gratitude for your loyal support throughout the years. Thank you for being part of our journey.” Currently, the company is offering a 55% discount on all products as part of its closing sale.

In addition to its website, Boscia plans to cease all operations, as confirmed by Beauty Independent. This decision is disappointing for loyal customers, as Boscia’s product line was distinct amidst a growing number of competitors that have emerged since its launch in 2002.

Boscia had sought to “revolutionize beauty routines around the world with products that are made for play and meant to be shared, because your skin wants in on the fun!” However, that revolution will come to an end on May 31, although there is a possibility of an asset sale in the future. As of now, the company has not revealed any further plans beyond its current closing sale. Attempts to reach Boscia through its contact page have not received a response.
