Macy’s to Close Popular Mall Location as Part of 150 Store Shutdown Plan

According to The Sun, Macy’s has announced that a store inside the Kingston Collection mall in Massachusetts will close in the coming months as part of a broader strategy to shut down 150 underperforming locations by 2026. While the company has reassured shoppers that the closure isn’t imminent, the store will remain open until early 2025, allowing customers to purchase Thanksgiving items and Christmas gifts.

According to The Patriot Ledger, a Macy’s spokesperson confirmed that the impending shutdown aligns with the chain’s goal to return to profitability. The Kingston Collection store has been a fixture in the mall since 1989, previously operating as a Filene’s outlet.

Local shoppers have expressed their disappointment over the news. One longtime customer shared, “It’s sad. I grew up here, and I’ve shopped here,” while another lamented, “I’m very disappointed. I love it.” Many reflected on their fond memories of the mall, with one shopper noting, “Such a bummer about the mall. The place was off the hook.”

The Kingston Collection mall also features other popular retailers, including Starbucks, Sunglass Hut, Target, and Toys R Us. It remains unclear what will take the place of the Macy’s store after it closes. Despite the closures, Macy’s will not exit Massachusetts entirely, as the chain operates more than a dozen other locations in the state. However, stores in Braintree and Hanover are also slated for closure.

The Kingston store is not the only Macy’s location facing shutdown; a store in Tucker, Georgia, approximately 24 minutes northeast of Atlanta, is set to close by early next year.

The decision to close 150 stores follows a difficult fourth-quarter report, prompting Macy’s executives to reevaluate their strategy. Macy’s CEO Tony Spring stated that the company plans to refurbish 350 outlets and open 15 Bloomingdale locations as part of their efforts to improve customer relationships through enhanced shopping experiences, relevant product assortments, and compelling value.

This store closure announcement comes just years after Macy’s revealed plans to shut down 125 outlets, reflecting a broader trend among major retailers, including JCPenney and Belk, which have also faced store closures in recent years.
