Kadarius Toney Joins Cleveland Browns’ Practice Squad
The Cleveland Browns are adding former Florida Gators wide receiver Kadarius Toney to their practice squad, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport. Toney, a 2021 first-round draft pick, had a brief stint with the New York Giants before being traded to the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs recently released him ahead of the 2024 season.
Toney’s NFL Journey
Toney’s career has been marked by both promise and setbacks. Despite his high draft status, he struggled to live up to expectations and has often been labeled a first-round bust. However, his potential continued to attract interest from teams in need of receiving help. In recent weeks, he met with several teams, including the Seattle Seahawks, before landing with the Browns.
Career Highlights and Challenges
During his college career at Florida, Toney amassed 2,641 all-purpose yards over 38 games. He recorded 120 receptions for 1,590 yards and 12 touchdowns, and also rushed for 580 yards and two touchdowns. Toney was a key player for Florida’s last New Year’s Six Bowl team alongside quarterback Kyle Trask and tight end Kyle Pitts in 2020.
As an NFL rookie, Toney showed potential with 39 receptions for 420 yards, though he failed to score a touchdown and missed several games due to injuries. His career has been marred by various off-field issues and recurring injuries, including a knee surgery and hamstring problems that affected his performance.
Current Status and Future Prospects
Toney’s time with the Chiefs was disappointing, and he was deemed a replacement-level performer in 2023. Joining the Browns’ practice squad presents an opportunity for him to rehabilitate his career. Although not ideal for a player with his background, it’s a chance for Toney to demonstrate his capabilities and potentially earn a spot on the active roster. The Browns will be looking to see if Toney can overcome his injury woes and fulfill the potential that once made him a top draft prospect.
