How long until clocks ‘fall back?’

(WJW) – Can you feel it? The days are getting shorter. And in less than two months, the change will become even more noticeable.

The Shift to Standard Time

On Sunday, Nov. 3, the clocks will once again “fall back,” marking the end of daylight saving time. This adjustment means earlier sunsets and what can feel like very long winter nights. Since March, we’ve been enjoying the extended daylight hours, but as the saying goes, “all good things must come to an end.”

Daylight Decrease in Cleveland

The length of daylight in Cleveland has been decreasing since June 20, and Northeast Ohio is losing about 2 minutes of daylight each day. This trend will continue until the autumnal equinox on September 22. Once daylight saving time ends, the sun will set in Cleveland as early as 4:58 p.m. by mid-December. The shortest day of the year will be Winter Solstice on Dec. 20, with just 9 hours and 13 minutes of daylight.

Upcoming Sunset Milestones

According to Fox 8 Meteorologist Jenn Harcher, there are several key sunset milestones to watch for over the next couple of months:

  • Last 7 p.m. sunset: October 6
  • Last 6 p.m. sunset: November 2
  • Clocks fall back: November 3
  • Last 5 p.m. sunset: November 26 (returns on December 19)

Efforts to End the Clock Change

There has been increasing discussion about ending the biannual clock change, but so far, the movement has not gained significant traction in Ohio.

A Silver Lining

On the bright side, when the clocks turn back, we get an extra hour of sleep. Plus, the earlier sunsets provide an extended opportunity to enjoy festive Christmas lights and other winter activities.
