Fudge Recall Alert: FDA Classifies Risk Level Due to Mold Contamination

According to News Week, A recall of certain Authentik Fudge/Montreal Fudge products has been classified by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as posing a Class II risk level due to potential mold contamination. The Canada-based manufacturer voluntarily recalled its Chocolate Fudge with Nuts product sold under the Montreal Fudge brand on August 14.

On Friday, the FDA confirmed that the recall’s risk classification indicates that “the use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”

  • Class I: Indicates a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.
  • Class II: Denotes that the product may cause temporary or medically reversible health issues, with a remote chance of serious consequences.
  • Class III: Applied when the use of or exposure to the product is not likely to cause adverse health effects.

The contaminated fudge items were distributed on June 19 and June 20 and were available at TJ Maxx locations in states such as Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. Consumer Safety and Recommendations

The firm initiated the recall after receiving a consumer complaint about the presence of mold in the purchased product. They found additional sealed products at the manufacturing facility showing initial signs of mold.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service cautions that some molds on food can pose health risks. “Some molds cause allergic reactions and respiratory problems, and a few molds, in the right conditions, produce ‘mycotoxins,’ poisonous substances that can make you sick,” they stated.

If you have purchased any of the affected products, the FDA recommends that you destroy them or return them to the point of purchase for a full refund.
