Following Feedback, Cleveland Schools Bring Back ‘Get More Opportunities Fund’

CLEVELAND — Leaders in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) have announced the relaunch of the “Get More Opportunities Fund,” a program initially introduced under former CEO Eric Gordon. The fund, which was paused due to a budget deficit last school year, is set to return with new enhancements.

The program originally came into existence after billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott donated $20 million to the district in 2022. The district had halted the program while addressing financial challenges, but following community and Cleveland City Council backlash, CMSD decided to revive it.

Changes to the Fund

Current CMSD CEO Dr. Warren Morgan, now in his second year leading the district, emphasized that the relaunch incorporates significant changes based on community feedback. Unlike before, the remaining funds from Scott’s donation will not be centrally controlled. Instead, CMSD will allocate $4 million annually over the next four years directly to schools.

Each CMSD school will receive between $30,000 and $55,000, depending on a base allocation and additional funds based on student enrollment. This new approach aims to enhance equity, access, and opportunity across the district.

New Application Process

The revamped program, known as Get More Opportunities Fund 2.0, will now have a local review process. Proposals for funding will be submitted to review committees led by school principals. These committees will include students, parents, and staff, ensuring a broader range of voices in decision-making.

Funds will be used for various purposes, including enrichment programs, facility upgrades, and investments in technology and equipment. Dr. Morgan highlighted the importance of innovative ideas that positively impact students and reflect their voices.
