Elderly Hiker Falls 10 Feet in New York Wilderness, Lands on Head
First responders carried out a dramatic rescue after a 70-year-old man suffered a serious fall while hiking in New York’s Blue Ridge Wilderness.

On Friday, September 6, at approximately 1:40 p.m., Hamilton County 911 alerted Ray Brook Dispatch about an SOS beacon activated on the Northville Placid Trail. The hiker, from Pennsylvania, had fallen about 10 feet while moving from a footbridge onto the trail, landing head-first into a rock pile.
Immediate Assistance
Fortunately, a member of the hiking party was a wilderness first responder and provided initial care until professional rescuers arrived. The first responder reported potential head and spinal injuries.
Forest Rangers’ Efforts
Forest Rangers Milano and Snye reached the injured hiker around 2:30 p.m. Soon after, five additional rangers arrived, and together they used a backpack litter to transport the man 1.5 miles to Indian Lake EMS. From there, he was airlifted by a LifeNet helicopter to the hospital.
Condition Update
As of now, no further details about the 70-year-old’s condition have been released.
