BIG UPDATE: Goodbye to this Social Security check in September – The list of retirees who will not receive the money
As September approaches, some beneficiaries of the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program will not receive their regular Social Security check payments. This is due to a planned modification in the payment schedule, which resulted in SSI payments being distributed on the last Friday of August instead of the first of September. Here’s what you need to know about the changes to Social Security payments and other updates regarding SSI.
September SSI Payments Distributed Early
Typically, SSI payments are distributed by the Social Security Administration (SSA) on the first day of each month. However, since September 1, 2024, falls on a Sunday, the SSA rescheduled the payment date to Friday, August 30. This adjustment ensures that beneficiaries receive their payments on the last business day before the first of the month. Importantly, recipients will still receive their full September benefit, just on a slightly earlier date than usual.
This payment rescheduling will happen again in December and January. Since December 1 and January 1 also fall on weekends or holidays, the payments will be issued on the preceding business days, November 29 and December 31, respectively.
What About Social Security Check Payments?
Those who receive both Social Security and SSI benefits or who began receiving Social Security payments before May 1997 will not experience any changes to their payment schedules. They should expect their benefits to arrive on Tuesday, September 3, as usual.
For those who receive only Social Security payments, the date of payment depends on their birth date. If your birthday falls between the 1st and 10th of the month, you will receive your payment on September 11. If your birthday is between the 11th and 20th, your payment will arrive on September 18. Finally, if your birthday is between the 21st and the end of the month, your payment will be issued on September 25.
How Much Will Beneficiaries Receive in September?
The amount of money beneficiaries receive in their Social Security checks depends on several factors, including their full retirement age, work history, and contributions to Social Security. Additionally, factors like income and resources for SSI recipients, and the type of disability for those receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), also affect the payment amount. Here’s a breakdown of average payments for various Social Security programs.
Other payments for specific groups are as follows:
- Age 62 retirees: $2,710
- Age 67 retirees: $3,822
- Age 70 retirees: $4,873
- Individuals with 2 children (Survivors benefits): $3,653
- Blind recipients (Disability benefits): $2,590
- Maximum SSDI payment: $3,822
- SSI benefits for individuals: $943
- SSI benefits for couples: $1,415
- Essential person allowance: $472
Upcoming Changes to the SSI Application Process
The Social Security Administration has also announced improvements to the SSI application process. Starting in December, certain applicants will be able to use an enhanced online application system. This update is aimed at streamlining the often lengthy and complex process of applying for SSI benefits.
Initially, the new system, called the “iClaim expansion,” will be available to first-time, single applicants between the ages of 18 and 65 who are applying for both Social Security and SSI benefits. The SSA plans to make the system available to all applicants by late next year.
Social Security Commissioner Martin O’Malley stated, “The SSA is committed to achieving that vision over the next few years. People in our communities who depend on this vital safety net deserve the dignity of an application process that is less onerous and more accessible than what we currently have.”
As these changes roll out, SSI and Social Security beneficiaries can expect a more efficient application process and clearer communication from the SSA.
