BIG RECALL: Scones Recall Update As FDA Sets Risk Level

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced the risk level associated with two scone products that were voluntarily recalled by Skagit River Bakery & Café due to undeclared allergens. The affected products include batches of Blueberry and Marionberry Scones, which were pulled from shelves on August 22 after it was discovered that soy lecithin and soybean oil were not listed on the product labels.

Classification of the Recall

According to an FDA update released on Wednesday, the recall has been classified as Class II. This classification indicates that “the use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”

  • Class I: The most severe category, issued when there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.
  • Class III: This is designated for situations where the use of or exposure to a violative product is not likely to cause adverse health consequences.

Details of the Recall

The recall affects approximately 1,200 units of Marionberry Scones, which are bulk packaged in cake boxes with parchment paper and are not individually labeled. These products are held in bulk for retail sale, with each location maintaining a notebook detailing all the ingredients used in the scones.

Skagit River Bakery & Café initiated the recall voluntarily after receiving notification via a phone call regarding the labeling issue.

Health Risks of Undeclared Ingredients

Undeclared soy lecithin and soybean oil can pose significant health risks for individuals with soy allergies. Symptoms may range from mild rashes, itching, and hives to severe anaphylaxis, which can be life-threatening. According to Anaphylaxis U.K., those with soy allergies may experience immediate reactions or delayed reactions, which can manifest hours to days after consuming soy.
