Americans to get one-time payment from $115m privacy settlement- Know How To Apply
Americans could be eligible for cash payments from a substantial $115 million settlement stemming from a privacy class action lawsuit against Oracle, a prominent cloud applications provider. This settlement addresses claims that Oracle illegally collected personal information from the internet and sold it to third parties for advertising purposes.
The lawsuit alleges that Oracle tracked various user activities, including web browsing, in-store purchases, and geolocation, without obtaining consumer consent. The company is said to have sold this data to advertisers, partnering with major companies such as Uber, AMC, and MGM Resorts.
Who Benefits from the Settlement?
The settlement will benefit individuals whose personal information was collected by Oracle or made available through products like ID Graph and Data Marketplace since August 19, 2018. Although Oracle has not admitted to any wrongdoing, it has agreed to the multi-million dollar payout to resolve the data privacy allegations.
Under the settlement terms, class members will receive an equal share of the net settlement fund. However, the exact payment amount will depend on the total number of claims filed and any associated fees deducted from the fund.
Changes in Oracle’s Practices
As part of the settlement agreement, Oracle has committed to not capturing user-generated information from referral websites or forms on its own site. The company will also implement an audit program to ensure compliance with its privacy obligations moving forward.
Important Deadlines
Class members need to be aware of critical deadlines related to this settlement. The deadline for individuals to exclude themselves from the settlement or file objections is October 17, 2024. Furthermore, class members must submit a valid claim form by the same date. The final approval hearing for the settlement is set for November 14, 2024.
Other Noteworthy Settlements
In addition to the Oracle settlement, customers of Visa and Mastercard may also qualify for payments from a significant $197.5 million settlement. This settlement addresses a class action lawsuit alleging that the companies imposed unlawful surcharges on ATM transactions, including cash withdrawals. Visa and Mastercard opted for the settlement following claims of violations of federal antitrust laws.
Additionally, individuals may be eligible for over $7,000 from a $3.25 million settlement related to a data breach at See Tickets, which reportedly failed to protect consumer information during a cyberattack in September 2023. Although the company denied any wrongdoing, it agreed to the settlement to resolve the lawsuit.
