Amazon Announces End of Popular Delivery Service: What Shoppers Need to Know
According to The Sun, Amazon has announced the closure of its highly popular Amazon Today service, which offered same-day delivery from local retailers. The decision aims to reduce overlap in the company’s fast shipping options, with the program set to cease operations on January 24, 2025.
What is Amazon Today?
Amazon Today allowed customers to collect orders from nearby stores for same-day delivery. However, a spokesperson confirmed that this service will no longer provide delivery and in-store pickup with select retail partners. Fortunately, most products previously available through Amazon Today will still be offered via other same-day and next-day delivery methods.
Impact on Employees
The program’s closure affects approximately 175 employees, but the majority will be transferred to other positions within the company. This move is part of Amazon’s strategy to streamline its offerings, as they have identified significant overlap between Amazon Today and other fast delivery programs.
Transition to Other Services
Amazon has indicated that the decision to sunset Amazon Today is a result of its expanding Same-Day and One-Day Delivery options. A spokesperson mentioned, “As we’ve continued increasing the selection available with Same-Day and One-Day Delivery, we’ve seen a growing overlap between those programs and Amazon Today.” Customers can still access a vast range of products, with Same-Day Delivery available in over 120 metro areas across the U.S.

New Product Launches
This announcement coincides with Amazon’s recent product launches, including a new Fire Stick device and the introduction of new Kindle models, including the company’s first-ever color e-reader.
The updated Fire TV Stick HD replaces the previous Fire TV Stick and Fire TV Stick Lite models. While the new device retains the same black rectangular design and supports 1080p Full HD, there are subtle enhancements, especially for the Lite version. The new remote control features additional buttons for full TV control, allowing users to adjust volume and mute without needing their main TV remote.
As Amazon continues to innovate and adapt its services, the closure of Amazon Today marks a significant shift in how the company approaches fast shipping and customer convenience.
