Lakewood’s Former Hospital Site Set for Transformation with New Development

After years of failed redevelopment attempts, the long-vacant Lakewood Hospital site is finally on the brink of transformation. Located on a six-acre lot off Detroit Avenue, the site, which has become an eyesore for locals, is set to get a much-needed facelift. Carlo Ramos, owner of The Tea Lab in Lakewood, has had an unfortunate view of the former hospital, known to residents as “The pit,” for eight years. However, that view is now on the cusp of change.

“I’m ready for the tumbleweeds to go away, and I can’t wait to see a banner announcing that this project is finally underway,” Ramos shared.

Since Lakewood Hospital was demolished, the city has seen several redevelopment proposals fall through. But now, a solid plan appears to be moving forward. Lakewood Mayor Meghan George expressed optimism, saying, “We’re finally here with a solid project that meets the objectives of the community.”

The development plan involves a mixed-use building with 298 apartment units, retail spaces, and a 3-story parking garage. The project aims to inject new life into the area and enhance downtown Lakewood’s vibrancy by attracting residents and fostering economic growth.

The final step before breaking ground is approval from the city council. Mayor George indicated that all necessary steps, including Architectural Board of Review and planning commission approval, have already been completed, and construction could start as soon as next year.

While many locals are skeptical after years of dashed hopes, Ramos remains optimistic. “It took a little longer than we wanted, but I believe this time it’s really going to happen,” he said.
