Important Update: SSI Payments of Up to $472 Issued on New Date

Contrary to common belief, the SSI program is not funded by Social Security, but by the federal government. Therefore, the money for SSI payments does not come from the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) Trust Funds. The amount you receive depends on your eligibility and circumstances.

For instance, if you are an “essential person,” your payment can be as high as $472. An individual who is low-income, has limited or no resources, and is either blind, disabled, or at least 65 years old may receive up to $943. Married couples can receive a maximum of $1,415. These amounts do not include the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) for 2025.

SSI Payment Date Changes for December

All eligible SSI beneficiaries received their benefit payments in November, with checks and direct deposits issued on November 1, 2024. However, if you look closely at the Social Security payment schedule, you’ll notice that there is no SSI payment scheduled for December 1. This is not because the payment was canceled; instead, it has been rescheduled to be issued earlier.

The December SSI payment will be issued two days in advance, on November 29, 2024. This means that SSI recipients will effectively receive two payments in November, but it’s simply the December payment being sent ahead of schedule.

Why is the December SSI Payment Issued Early?

The reason for this adjustment is that the Social Security Administration cannot issue SSI payments on a federal holiday. Since January 1, 2025, falls on a holiday, SSA will release the January SSI payment on December 31, 2024. This ensures that approximately 7.5 million SSI recipients will receive their 2025 COLA increase before many retirees do.

Maximum SSI Benefits for December 31, 2024

With the COLA increase for 2025, the following are the new maximum amounts for SSI payments, effective December 31, 2024:

• Essential person: $484
• Individual: $967
• Married couple: $1,450
