Shoppers Alert: Dollar Tree Competitor Closes Two Locations, Discounts Up for Grabs

According to The Sun, Two popular discount retailers, including Dirt Cheap, known for offering extreme value deals, have announced their closure after filing for bankruptcy. This move comes as the chain prepares to shut down all of its locations, providing shoppers with a final opportunity to snag last-minute bargains.

Bankruptcy and Store Closures

Dirt Cheap has officially filed for bankruptcy in Delaware, marking a challenging chapter for the retailer. The announcement includes the closure of all its stores, including two locations in Tennessee, specifically in Murfreesboro and Smyrna. Customers can take advantage of the closing-down sales happening at these stores before they close their doors for good, although the exact closing date remains uncertain—reports suggest it could be by the end of the year.

At its peak, Dirt Cheap operated over 60 locations across eight states, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Texas, and Louisiana, where all nine stores will also be closing.

Final Sales and Discounts

As the chain begins its closing sales, shoppers are expected to find significant discounts, with prices slashed between 70% and 90%. Bargain hunters can find clothing, shoes, and various items for under $5. Some stores, such as the one near the company’s headquarters in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, are already advertising their closing-down sales on social media, creating a buzz among loyal customers.

Reasons for Closure

Jeffrey Martin, the recently appointed chief restructuring officer at Channel Control Merchants, the parent company of Dirt Cheap, cited financial difficulties and increased competition from major retailers as contributing factors to the store closures. The retail landscape has become increasingly challenging, leading to this decision.

Customer reactions to the closures have been emotional, with many expressing their disappointment. One customer lamented, “I hate this! I love shopping at Dirt Cheap,” while another reflected on the joy of finding deals at the store.

Broader Retail Landscape Changes

Dirt Cheap is not alone in facing closures. A total of 150 underperforming Macy’s stores are set to close by the end of 2026 as part of the company’s growth strategy. Additionally, hundreds of Big Lots outlets and 7-Eleven convenience stores are also shutting down, with over 400 7-Eleven locations across the nation closing their doors. Despite these closures, companies emphasize their commitment to optimizing operations and opening new outlets that align with customer demands.
