Halloween 2024: Trick-or-Treaters Face Smaller Candy Bars Amid Rising Cocoa Costs

According to The Sun, Halloween candy hauls may take a hit this year as cocoa prices have soared, prompting industry leaders to warn consumers about potential changes in candy products. Major chocolate manufacturers, including Hershey and Mars, are expected to reduce the size of variety packs and shrink candy bars due to the doubling of cocoa prices.

Challenges in Cocoa Farming

Cocoa cultivation is a delicate process, heavily reliant on favorable weather conditions. Unfortunately, this year, cocoa farmers have faced significant challenges. The primary cocoa-producing regions in West Africa, such as Ghana and the Ivory Coast, have been adversely affected by the El Niño climate pattern, which has led to drier conditions over the past three years. As a result, cocoa supplies are dwindling, leading to fierce competition among candy makers for the remaining crop.

David Branch, sector manager at Wells Fargo’s Agri-Food Institute, explained, “Cocoa is not like a normal agricultural crop where you have it grown everywhere, like other commodities. It takes a very specific site and temperature range to grow.”

Declining Global Cocoa Production

According to the International Cocoa Organization, global cocoa production is projected to decrease by 14.2% this season. Earlier this year, chocolate companies began feeling the impact of rising cocoa prices during key holidays such as Valentine’s Day and Easter when prices were only half of what they are now. Michele Buck, president of Hershey, reported a staggering 48.7% drop in the company’s operating profit compared to last year.

Looking Ahead to Halloween

Despite these challenges, Hershey remains optimistic about Halloween, assuring consumers that prices for Halloween candy should not be affected. Branch noted that current weather conditions for this year’s crop are promising, which may help stabilize supply. “So far, we’re having really decent weather for this year’s crop,” he said, suggesting that prices may decrease as supply improves.

Creative Solutions Amid Rising Costs

As consumers have already noticed an increase in chocolate prices due to declining cocoa supply, some are exploring inventive ways to cut costs this Halloween. One parent shared that they plan to hand out chips instead of traditional candy as a budget-friendly alternative.

Manufacturers’ Strategies to Mitigate Costs

To manage costs and keep prices stable, companies are focusing on producing more non-chocolate candies. Experts indicate that chocolate variety packs are likely to shrink in size until cocoa production recovers by September 2025. Branch highlighted the trend of “shrinkflation,” where companies reduce portion sizes while maintaining prices.

“You get a two-pound bag of a mixture of all these different candies from a company; that bag is probably going down to be less than two pounds now at the same price point,” Branch stated.

Additionally, some companies may modify their recipes to exclude chocolate, opting for alternative ingredients like nuts or wafers.

Conclusion: Chocolate Remains King

Despite the challenges posed by rising cocoa prices and changes in production, chocolate continues to reign as the most popular candy. Consumers can expect to find chocolate on store shelves this Halloween, albeit potentially in smaller quantities.
