Holiday Pause: Target Closes All Stores for Thanksgiving, Shoppers Must Adjust Plans
According to The Sun, Target has announced that all 1,956 of its stores will close for an entire day to observe Thanksgiving, which falls on November 28 this year. The retailer’s decision allows employees to spend the holiday with their families, marking the fifth consecutive year that Target will shut its doors for Thanksgiving.
In a statement, CEO Brian Cornell noted that the policy to remain closed on Thanksgiving Day was made permanent following the company’s initial decision in 2020. This change came as a response to the pandemic and was further reinforced by feedback from employees who appreciated the time off with their families. Cornell stated, “It’s hard to believe nearly four years have passed since we last opened our stores on Thanksgiving. Staying closed on that day helped us take care of our team and guests during the pandemic.”
Cornell emphasized that keeping stores closed on Thanksgiving has become feasible due to Target’s strong business model, which enables them to meet customers’ holiday needs outside of traditional store hours. He also expressed gratitude for employees’ hard work, highlighting the importance of family time on holidays.

While Target has made its plans clear, many other retailers have yet to announce their holiday hours. Last year, companies such as Walmart, BJ’s Wholesale Club, and Costco also closed their doors for Thanksgiving, allowing workers to celebrate the holiday. Trader Joe’s has a long-standing tradition of shutting its stores on Thanksgiving, a practice that has continued for over 30 years.
As the holiday approaches, shoppers seeking last-minute groceries will still find options at Dollar General and Big Lots, which will remain open.
